Virtual Home Garden Competition 2020
The global spread of Coronavirus Covid-19 means it is not possible to run our garden competitions in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) this spring. However, we will continue to encourage people to sow seeds and enjoy gardening by celebrating refugee and IDP camp home gardens with a ‘virtual’ home garden exhibition this year.
Residents in seven refugee and IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps have been invited to share photographs of their plants and home garden spaces. We’re relying on technology to share the photos (via WhatsApp and Facebook groups) whilst encouraging everyone to practice social distancing and remain at home to #StopTheSpread. Our Lemon Tree Trust garden facilitators in each camp will choose a ‘winner’ each week and we will celebrate by sharing the photos on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter with a little information about the gardeners.
As people self-isolate and stay home, home gardens are more important than ever. We are constantly inspired by the creativity and ingenuity of people living in situations of forced migration – you too can ‘virtually’ enjoy the beautiful pots, containers, flower beds, herbs and food being grown across the KRI this spring.
“Our guiding principle has always been to encourage home gardening by distributing seeds. It’s a simple, but beautifully effective response to the ever-growing refugee and IDP crisis. As we all adjust to life in lockdown, watching as Covid-19 forces our daily lives to slow and adapt to a new kind of ‘normal’, we are driven more than ever by a desire to spread joy, hope and purpose through the distribution of packets of flower and food seeds. We first ran a garden competition in Domiz 1 camp in the KRI in 2016, which attracted 50 entries. In every year since, more gardeners have entered and following their success. Last year, our annual garden competitions took place in a record seven camps, with nearly 1,500 gardens in the running for prizes. This year, we had planned to run competitions in twelve camps and look forward to revisiting that in 2021. For this year, we are working on a safe way to distribute flower and vegetable seeds so that people can still plant in their home gardens.
الانتشار العالمي لفيروس كورونا كوفيد-19 يعني أنه من غير الممكن إدارة مسابقاتنا في الحدائق في إقليم كردستان العراق هذا الربيع. ومع ذلك، سنستمر في تشجيع الناس على زرع البذور والاستمتاع بالبستنة من خلال الاحتفال بالحدائق المنزلية للاجئين ومخيمات النازحين داخليًا بمعرض الحدائق “الافتراضي” هذا العام.
تمت دعوة سكان سبعة مخيمات للاجئين والنازحين داخليًا لتبادل الصور الخاصة بالنباتات ومساحات الحدائق المنزلية. نحن نعتمد على التكنولوجيا لمشاركة الصور (عبر مجموعات WhatsApp و Facebook) بينما نشجع الجميع على ممارسة التباعد الاجتماعي والبقاء في المنزل ل #وقف_انتشار_الفيروس. سيختار منسقون منظمة Lemon Tree Trust في كل مخيم “فائزًا” كل أسبوع وسنحتفل بيهم عن طريق مشاركة الصور عن طريق مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي في Instagram و Facebook و Twitter مع اعطاء القليل من المعلومات حول البستانيين الفائزين.
بما أن الناس يعزلون أنفسهم ويبقون في المنزل، فإن الحدائق المنزلية أكثر أهمية من أي وقت مضى. نستلهم باستمرار من الإبداع والبراعة لدى الأشخاص الذين يعيشون في حالات الهجرة القسرية – يمكنك أيضًا الاستمتاع فعليًا بالأواني والحاويات وأحواض الزهور والأعشاب والأطعمة التي يتم زراعتها في إقليم كوردستان-العراق هذا الربيع.
“كان مبدأنا التوجيهي دائمًا هو تشجيع البستنة المنزلية من خلال توزيع البذور. إنها استجابة بسيطة ولكنها فعالة بشكل جميل لأزمة اللاجئين والنازحين المتزايدة باستمرار. بينما نتكيف جميعا مع الحياة في حالة من الانغلاق, ونشاهد كيف ان وباه كوفيد-19 يجير حياتنا اليومية على التباطؤ والتكيف مع نوع جديد من الروتين، فإننا مدفوعون أكثر من أي وقت مضى بالرغبة في نشر الفرح والأمل والهدف من خلال التوزيع ظروف الزهور وبذور الطعام. شكرا لكل من يدعم عملنا وينضم إلينا في احتفالنا بالحدائق والبستنة للجميع.”
